# n8n playbooks

n8n is a workflow automation tool from the company of the same name. You build workflows on a visual canvas, and an AI Agent node lets a chat model pick tools inside a workflow. Teams use it to wire models such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Google into jobs that touch their other apps, either on n8n Cloud or on their own servers.

- Vendor: n8n
- Kind: automation-platform
- Surfaces: web, self-hosted, api
- Connects: The MCP Client Tool node lets an agent call tools from an external MCP server. Common servers connect in one click from a registry. Instance-level MCP and the MCP Server Trigger node expose your workflows to outside MCP clients.

- Docs: https://docs.n8n.io

## Good at

- Mixing fixed workflow steps with an AI agent that picks tools only where a step needs judgment
- Running on your own servers, with a free Community edition for self-hosting
- Acting as an MCP server, so clients such as Claude Desktop can find and run workflows you enable

## Limits

- The AI Agent node fails until you attach a chat model and at least one tool sub-node
- Self-hosting means you install, update and secure the instance yourself
- Enterprise features such as SSO need a paid plan on both Cloud and self-hosted
- Older v1 agent nodes will be removed in n8n 3.0, so old workflows may need an update
