# Agents put calendar events at the wrong hour when time zones are involved

- Agents: Claude, Claude Cowork, n8n, Custom agent
- Updated: 2026-10-13

## Problem

An agent reads or creates a calendar event and the time is off by one or more hours. The agent often reports the right time in chat while the event itself sits at the wrong time, so the mistake is easy to miss.

## Symptoms

- The agent says an event is at 3 PM, but the calendar shows 11 PM.
- An event is exactly one hour off around a daylight saving change.
- The agent states the wrong length or end time for an event.
- Events near midnight UTC show up on the wrong day.

## Cause

Reported causes include an offset and a time zone both sent to the calendar, so the shift is applied twice (suggested in an n8n forum thread), the model doing UTC math in its head (Claude's own explanation in a Mac Power Users thread), and daylight saving rules that a simple offset does not cover (a builder's blog post). Google's Calendar API docs say a start time needs an offset unless a time zone is given separately.

## Fix

Ask the agent for local times plus an IANA time zone name such as Europe/Lisbon, taken from the text of the email or booking. Do not let it convert times in its head. When it writes to the calendar, send either a time with an offset or a local time plus a time zone, never both. Make it read the created events back from the calendar and compare them with the source, and check a few on your phone. For automated workflows, keep a human approval step until a few weeks of events come out right.

## Evidence

- [Timezone issue when creating Google Calendar events](https://community.n8n.io/t/timezone-issue-when-creating-google-calendar-events/92828) (forum): The agent said it booked 3 PM to 4 PM Taipei time, but the event was created at 11 PM. A reply blames the offset being applied twice. A later user still saw a one-hour shift with date transforms.

- [Calendar hallucinations](https://community.n8n.io/t/calendar-hallucinations/80962) (forum): The poster says an n8n calendar agent listed some appointments at times that did not match the calendar, and its output showed overlapping slots on one day, with no error shown.

- [Claude, feeling like things are so close yet so far away](https://talk.macpowerusers.com/t/claude-feeling-like-things-are-so-close-yet-so-far-away/44925) (forum): The poster says Claude gave wrong event times from a calendar connector, including a wrong end time for an evening event, and blamed its own UTC conversion. A later Cowork run that created events had a GMT offset problem.

- [Building an email to calendar LLM](https://ngacho.com/blog/emaillm/) (blog): The author planned to have the model return UTC and convert it, and reports that daylight saving time made this harder than expected.
