# AI summaries change quotes, numbers and timestamps, or describe pages they never read

- Agents: Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Custom agent
- Updated: 2026-10-13

## Problem

When an agent turns a transcript, video or article into a summary, it can alter a quote, misstate a number, place a moment at the wrong time, or summarise a page it could not open. The output looks confident and the error goes out under your name.

## Symptoms

- A quote reads well but cannot be found in the transcript.
- A clip timestamp lands on the wrong part of the episode.
- A summary describes an article that is paywalled, broken or missing.
- A statistic is rounded, reworded or attached to the wrong thing.

## Cause

Models paraphrase by default and fill gaps with plausible text. Timestamps inferred from a long file drift. When a page fails to load, some tools build a summary from the URL or from memory instead of saying so.

## Fix

Work from a source the agent was actually given: a timestamped transcript or the page text. Ask for quotes copied word for word and numbers tagged with where they came from. Ask the agent to report which links it could not read. Check every quote, number and timestamp against the source before you publish, or have a script check quotes against the transcript.

## Evidence

- [Gemini 3 transcript of a 90-minute podcast had wrong quotes and timestamps](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45970450) (hn): The commenter found quotes the hosts never said, timestamps off by about 50 minutes, and paraphrase presented as transcript.

- [Show HN tool for summarising a Watch Later list of videos](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46364821) (hn): The builder reports timestamps drifting by under a minute and fixed it by checking them against raw transcript segments.

- [ChatGPT couldn't access the internet, even though it looked like it could](https://simonwillison.net/2023/Mar/10/chatgpt-internet-access/) (blog): Willison showed ChatGPT, before it had browsing, writing a confident summary of an article from its URL alone.
