Grok use cases

Grok is an AI assistant for chat, coding, image and video generation, and real-time answers from the web and X. It runs on grok.com, in iOS and Android apps and inside X. The Grok FAQ names SpaceXSI as the provider of the consumer service, while the developer API still runs under xAI.

Good at

• Answers that draw on recent posts on X as well as the web
• Image and video generation through Grok Imagine
• Building on the API with built-in web search, X search and code execution tools

Limits

• Paid plans share one weekly usage pool across products. When it runs out you buy extra credits or upgrade.
• Grok Imagine adds a watermark to images and videos that you cannot remove.
• Remote MCP is documented for the developer API. The consumer app docs do not mention MCP.

Lessons for Grok

AI research tools cite sources that are broken, made up, or do not say what is claimed
Ask for the exact supporting sentence for every claim. Check every link in a fresh session or with a script that records whether it loads and whether the sentence is there. Resolve every DOI or arXiv ID against a metadata source such as Crossref, OpenAlex or arXiv and compare title and authors. Read the sources behind any claim you publish or act on. For literature work, ground the agent in papers you hold instead of asking it to list papers from memory.
